Leadership Resources – Northwestern University

May 28, 2010

While administrators may be the formal leaders of our schools, there are also folks who play a role in leadership more indirectly.   Northwestern University’s Distributed Leadership Studies (DLS) program has been exploring, researching, and providing tools for assessing the leadership in schools.   It looks like pretty fascinating material – and I’ve sent for it.  Watch for a future blog entry regarding Northwestern, and their Distributed Leadership program.

According to an article by James P. Spillane, (Kappan November 2009)  DLS examines leadership and management through “a framework of the interactions of leaders, followers and the aspect of context.”  These researchers identify that multiple people take on roles that result in leadership.  This seems appropriate, and long overdue.
